Tips for Shopping in the Sales

A purchase is only a bargain if it fits in with the rest of your wardrobe, suits you and you can afford it. Buying odd pieces because they are on sale will just sit in your wardrobe and never be worn.

Before you go shopping know what you have in your wardrobe and know the areas you need to add to.

Look for good classic staple items i.e. a black suit, cashmere jumper, wool cardigan/jacket, white blouse.

Update your existing wardrobe with shoes, belts and jewellery.

Check out the returns policy on sale goods if you are unsure when buying something.

DONT impulse buy.

DONT buy anything you need to slim to wear.

DONT buy anything without trying in on first.

Outfits MUST flatter your colour and shape. Dont go for fashion garments for the sake of fashion.

Last Minute Gift Ideas

Don't panic. Sit and write out who you still need to buy for.

There are a lot of gifts you can buy on line e.g. theatre/band tickets, amazon e-gift vouchers, memberships for National Trust, English Heritage or Royal Horticulture Society. There may be a local vineyard close by where you can buy vouchers for vineyard tours and wine tasting evenings. Most cinemas offer unlimited monthly or annual passes and can be bought over the phone or online.

Spa and pampers days are really popular and available at health resorts and large hotels. For anyone with a favorite TV programme, there could be a DVD or book sold in a good bookshop.

Business Edge Magazine Q&A - I was invited on the 'panel of experts'

Q.    I am a manager of an IT Company employing office and sales staff.  I am looking to give guidelines and advice to employees for dressing in the workplace.

 A.   Dress in the workplace must be thought about as it is the first impressions many customers and suppliers have of your company and the employees.  Everyone whether in work uniform or on management level must dress cleanly, neatly, professionally and sharply.

Suits should be well cut and of the best material to enable them to hang and fit right. Dark suits give the impression of confidence and authority and are best worn with a good plain or striped shirt and tie, or non fussy blouse/top.  Dresses and jackets are a smart option for women.

For women, keep hemlines below the knee, hide away cleavages and sleeves should be capped or longer but not strappy.  Make up must always be kept natural and make sure that nails are well manicured.  Hair should be styled or if long kept tidy. Be aware that if hair is highlighted or coloured that the roots do not dominate.

For men wear leather formal shoes – black with a black, grey or navy suit.  Women can wow with a pair of killer heels but always make sure shoes are clean and polished.

It is important to personalize and create your individual style, but women must not over accessorise by wearing bows, sequins or huge patterns. Your wardrobe should show your personality, suit you, your work and be compatible with your lifestyle.

A splash of red – a tie for a man, a top or accessories for women, can give a confidence boost and give an impression of authority, ideal for presentations and pitches.  Just be aware that if you blush under pressure or have a reddish complexion keep to blue colours.

Some Companies have a casual dress code and some have dress down days.  This is not an excuse for sloppy dressing - one piece of an outfit should be tailored or structured and it must be made clear whether jeans and trainers are allowed.

For employees in a company, dress for the job you want – not for the job you are in.  In the 80s the buzz word was ‘power dressing’ today it is ‘self branding’.

Great style is about knowing what suits you and what you feel good in.  It is not about trendy impulse buys, it is about investing in amazing pieces that show off your personal style again and again.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Autumn ranges coming into the shops

With the new season ranges filtering into our shops and boutiques - what is new for Autumn? Colours dominating are silver, greys, rich autumnal colours, fushia and mauves. Coats and suits are very structured and tailored, notice the exaggerated shoulders. Knitted coats and jackets are popular with layering and draping a big autumn feature. Black leather jackets are back together with boots covered with studs and buckles. Handbags have got smaller, but big enough to include everything a girl needs!

It is worth looking at the sale rail in the stores there are some fantastic bargains with very discounted prices. You could well bag a good bargain to refresh your summer wardrobe while we still have a few weeks of summer to enjoy.

The photo is one I styled for Knitting Magazine. I selected the model, sourced the clothing to go with the knitwear and found the fabulous location - Wiston House in Sussex. The photography is by kerbe.co.uk.
